This is a studio where you can get your quilt quilted in the manner you wish.
There are three main ways to quilt a quilt.
1. an allover pattern also sometimes called a pantograph or edge to edge.
2. custom quilted where an item may be echoed around, sashing and borders have a different design than that quilted into blocks, etc.
3. Heirloom quilting adds real beauty to a quilt. This type means that some designs are used in blocks or echoing is done, maybe many repeating echoes, sashes and borders are stitched in specific designs and there is a lot of background fill.
The background fill may be as I said, lots of echoing, or it may be crosshatching work, or it may be small meanderings in various shapes.
Trapunto work is a special type of heirloom quilting.
Below are examples.
ALLOVER
This pretty allover pattern is called "Holly Berries"
I have over 200 allover patterns at present from which you may choose. We can surely find one to enhance your quilt top.
CUSTOM
You can clearly see here on the back of this hummingbird themed quilt how the blocks have two different designs each and the sashes have a single flower design and the borders have a connected flower design. There are even hummingbirds in the corners.
HEIRLOOM
The close crosshatching makes this an heirloom quilt. None of the flowers were stitched over. Each time I came to the flower, we did a tiny backstitching, skipped the flower area and restarted the stitching when past the embroidered flower area. Lots of work yields lots of beauty.
The background fill in this one turns it into an heirloom. Not only that, it turned it into a WINNER! This quilt took in title of BEST OF SHOW at St. Charles, Missouri quilt show. I was so informed by the happy owner of the quilt.
Here is a closeup of a back view of this quilt so you can see how it was quilted.
Quilting fees start at one and a fourth cents per square inch. That is the price for an allover. Measure your quilt top. Length in inches times Width in inches = the square inches in the quilt. Number of square inches x .0125 = price for an allover quilting.
Ex. 80 inches by 100 inches = 8000 square inches.
8000 times .0125 = $100.
I go up to two and a quarter cents per square inch for custom (multiply by .0225)
I start heirloom quilting at three and a half cents per square inch for heirloom (multiply by .035). Heirloom may go higher depending on amount of work you want done.
I offer trapunto work, both real trapunto and faux trapunto work. The fees for these is determined by the extent of trapunto work needed in the quilt and which type trapunto work you are wanting, real or faux. These prices will be determined after you and I talk and I see pictures of your quilt and get a detailed description of what you are wanting.
I can sell you batting for your quilts, or you can provide your own. What I stock are mostly on rolls so we cut the shortest dimension you need:
*125 inch wide Warm and White (100% cotton)( if needed for a small quilt that we can cut the batting in half width for, I only charge you half the price.)
*125 inch wide Warm Blend (50/50 blend)
*90 inch wide Warm and Safe (fire retardant batting)
*Fairfield batting Queen sizes for machine quilters which is a 60/40 blend.
*Hobb's 100% poly - very economical batting about 96 inches wide.
And I still have a bit of queen sized and baby sized Matilda's Wool batting on hand.
Please go to my picturesite at www.picturetrail.com/kaysquiltingcorner and view my photos of the burning test I did on several batting combinations. You will be amazed. If you are making a top for a young child or an elderly person, (a smoker), I truly recommend you choose the Warm and Safe batting. It might still burn in a blazing inferno, but you will gain some time and even moments can make all the difference.
I give you a written summary of total charges that you accept before starting your quilt job, so no big surprises. Phone or email with your quilt size and your choice of batting, and I can tell you just what it will cost you.
I do offer the gorgeous SEW BATIK backs that are available just from longarm quilters. These are special order. You can drive over to see these and to feel the nice hand of these if you live close enough. You can go online and look at these, but please use my associate number so I can be credited for you having learned about the fabric from me. My associate number is
LAP-1107. You may link directly to their Batik wide backings page from my "support and links" page.
You may also provide your own backing and or batting.
Piecing Quilts With all the other work I do, I just cannot take on too many piecing jobs, just a few each year. Generally these are what someone else has already started and the blocks are already made. I do the job of finishing the task by joining the blocks with sashing and setting on borders. I charge according to the sized blocks and finished size of the quilt desired and any extra difficulties associated with that particular quilt. My design work for the project which is necessary for the finished work costs from $20 - $40, and is non refundable, but is applicable to the quilting fee. The sewing (piecing) part is charged at $18 an hour and I charge for the fabrics (retail price) used to create the finished project, the thread used for the quilting, the quilting, the batting and backing if I furnish these and the work for preparing the binding, and binding it. These can be considerable price, but I work to keep it as low as I can for you. I will give you a close estimate of all costs so you can accept or reject it. Please call. If I can work your project in, I will. These are always the toughest projects due to piecing often done by hand, or embroidery work that distorts the block sizes, but I think they are well worth having done to keep the memories.
What I need from you.
Quilt backs that have been squared and are an extra 6 inches long and an extra 6 inches wider than the tops.
When you contact me and agree to send a quilt, I will give you full instructions how to send it to me, but generally put the quilt top and back in plastic and send to the address I will give you. If you are sending the Batik fabric, please let me know if you have washed it as suggested by Sew Batik or if I need to do so for you.
You will most likely want to add insurance and tracking.
Please press the quilt tops for the best finished results.
If you have a preference on thread color, please tell me, or I will use my best judgment as to what will enhance your quilt.
Thanks for reading. I hope I hear from you.
